SPAIN
Mention the Spanish costas, and images of burger bars, high-rises, and 24/7/365 partying may spring to mind. But, if you know where to look, there is a world lying cheek-by-jowl to the more popular resorts that has great beauty, blessed with virgin coastline, bold and silent countryside, and a way of life that is quintessentially Spanish.
Time for a retake of the Spanish costas. Come and see the real Spain.
It seems to be going against the grain to start a travel article on the subject of violence, but I just had to soak up the atmosphere of the Roman Amphitheatre, on a baking-hot afternoon, with the salty smack of ocean rollers crashing on the beach just below. Gladiators killed each other here and in AD 259, a Christian bishop by the name of Fructuosus, was burned alive. Even more curious, he was honoured hundreds of years later by a basilica built in the arena. It's a magical, spellbinding spot, quite peaceful today.
