Mention Greece and most people think of any one of the 1,200 islands - Corfu, Naxos or Crete, or any isle in between - all with their own multifarious charms.
But you don't have to go to an island to have a great holiday: the mainland, particularly Central Greece, a great, irregular swathe stretching like a ragged tablecloth from Attica in the south to Macedonia in the north, is classical Greece at its best; it's the land of Jason and the Argonauts and their search for the Golden Fleece.
Walking along the tumbling coastline, or into the bold and silent hills beneath the Aegean sun, you begin to believe in legends. Clues to an ancient puzzle occur in the scenery and in the people all over this part of Greece: ruins, passages into the Underworld, the unwritten Vlach vernacular, ancient traditions and 'hanging' monasteries.
